One of the most interesting things I learned from the article is that American credit cards don't work to rent those bikes!

I don't think my Capital One Visa has a chip.I've had trouble in Europe in the past using any sort of automated ticket machine, in train stations, etc.

At one point I thought it had something to do with the PIN no being too short--four nos. Had mine changed to five numbers, and it worked fine as long as I remembered the five nos. (I am at that state...

Don't know 100% how to tell, but I think the chip cards require that you enter a PIN.  I found this on the Rick Steves website (2010). I've not in the past (haven't tried this year yet) had any...
